Due to high
demand in the region both from a customer and supplier perspective, DTS has, for
many years, been operating a secure backhaul network throughout Ashburton, that
allows us to provide highly available internet connectivity to our many
customers there.

DTS also
offers an extensive and highly diverse backhaul network throughout New Zealand
and Australia too – just throwing that out there in case you were wondering!

Side
note: If you are unsure what ‘backhaul’ is in relation to your internet
connectivity, think of this as the bridge between your physical internet
connection to your home and/or business, back to your internet providers core
network, that ultimately provides you with the ability to access the internet
to your home or office.

In
Ashburton, DTS works with two local fibre companies to provide internet access:
EA Networks, and Chorus.

It is well
known Chorus has an extensive nationwide network throughout New Zealand, that
allows providers such as DTS to be able to backhaul connectivity to different
points of presence (POP’s) where Chorus is available, if need be.

But what
about EA Networks? As a provider capable of servicing Ashburton and surrounding
regions only, backhaul options aren’t as readily available nationwide.

Therefore
to protect our EA Networks customers in particular (and Chorus customers too!),
DTS operates a Western and Eastern route 10Gbps Backhaul ring in Ashburton,
that spans our local Ashburton Chorus POP, to the EA Networks Bunker, back to
our primary Christchurch POP, linked via diverse backhaul fibres that do not physically
cross paths within Ashburton.   


Whilst DTS
cannot commit to providing 100% uptime to our customers in Ashburton, or
anywhere for that fact, the backhaul protection we have in place drastically
improves DTS’ ability to provide a stable and readily available connectivity
platform, and reduces any direct impact to our customers of a single event
disrupting services, such as a fibre cut or force majeure event taking out a
single backhaul service.
